Minimally Invasive Surgery

Many procedures can be done with tiny incisions. This type of surgery may lead to faster healing and less scarring. Using advanced technology, surgeons make small pencil-sized holes in the body. Video equipment is used to provide a magnified view of the surgical site.

Instruments are used to perform the surgery through the incisions. Our surgical suites are designed and equipped for minimally invasive surgery as well as traditional surgery. Talk to your surgeon to see if this type of procedure is right for you.

Some of the minimally invasive surgical procedures include:

  • Ear, nose and throat (ENT)
  • General surgery
  • Gynecology
  • Neonatal intensive care
  • Orthopedics
  • Spine
  • Urology
  • Vascular

Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery is one of the types of minimally invasive surgery, and some of The Valley Health System’s locations offer it as an option. It can help surgeons perform complex procedures with more precision. For patients, this can offer further benefits. For instance, patients may experience a shorter time in the hospital and quicker recovery. This can mean a faster return to work, hobbies and daily activities.

It’s important to know that the surgeon, not the robot, is in control. The surgeon performs procedures using small tools attached to a robotic arm. He or she uses a computer to guide the robot. A special camera provides better magnification. Also, advanced tools allow doctors to work through small incisions.

The robot matches the doctor’s hand movements during the procedure. However, it has greater range of motion than the human hand. This can allow for more flexibility and control.

Robotic Surgery with da Vinci®

Robotic surgery is offered at The Valley Health System using the da Vinci® Surgical System. Surgeons use this system for gynecologic procedures, prostate surgery, kidney surgery and other procedures.

Robotic Technology for Spine Surgery

Special robotic technology is also offered at The Valley Health System for spine surgery. This system is called the Mazor X Stealth™ Edition Robotic Guidance Platform. Surgeons use it to treat disc problems, scoliosis, spinal fractures and other conditions.

Robotics for Hips and Knees

A robotic system called Mako® is used at The Valley Health System for hip and knee replacement procedures. This can help to carefully position implants for each patient.

Individual results may vary. There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if robotic surgery or minimally invasive surgery is right for you.
